SUMMER TERM 2010

CLASS 1
Last term our topic was farms.  We had an exciting visit to Farmer Gow’s farm and went in a hay maze. We fed some lambs and some baby goats and also took the goats for a walk!!  Sam brought in lots of his farm toys for us to play with including lots of tractors and farm implements.

We also made a Scarecrow and entered it into a competition, we didn’t win but we were complimented on our hard work .We had great fun creating it.

This term our topic has been water. We made some boats and had a race with them. We also did some floating and sinking investigations. In PE we have been practising our ball skills especially throwing and catching.

CLASS 2
Recently Class 2 have been busy bees. They took part in a Partnership Music Festival where they enjoyed honey themed songs whilst wearing fancy hats that they had made. Many also enjoyed Wacky Wednesday where they went to a sports centre and participated in lots of different games and athletics.

As part of our topic, Fighting Fit, we were very lucky to be visited by Wheatley Fire Crew. They showed us around the fire engine which was very interesting and the children had all their questions answered. The best part was when they let everyone have a go on the hose out in the playground…some children managed to spray the water into the field beyond! We were also visited by PSCO Freeman who told us lots about her job and how the Police help people in different ways.

Throughout Humanities week the children joined in lots of different activities which included making Roman tiles and mosaics, thinking of very difficult Roman numeral maths for Mrs Hanger to calculate, developing their sense of rhythm whilst African drumming and taking part in a mini World Cup tournament. It was an extremely enjoyable, busy week!

CLASS 3
This term in Class 3 our topic has been “Mighty Mountains”.  Moira Gainey came in to show us mountaineering equipment and to share photos of some climbing experiences, which we thoroughly enjoyed.  We have read some mountain adventure stories and have learned lots by researching mountains we were interested in.  We have a display showcasing our work into mountains like Kilimanjaro, Kenya, K2, Ben Nevis and Fuji – come and have a look!

We also enjoyed Humanities week this term, during which our favourite activity was the mini World Cup tournament: the Year 4s in our class really loved working with Year 5s to organise it for the whole school and the event was a great success.   We also loved the archaeological digs, clay work and Roman mosaic making; learning about the history of the World Cup in Africa as well as about different countries in the continent.

Towards the end of term we had our school outdoor week and especially enjoyed our trip to a climbing wall and doing some orienteering – all still tied in to our topic!

CLASS 4 (by Holly and Gareth)
This term we’ve been doing a lot of different activities.  As you know, Mrs Morgan has now left, so Mrs Brooks and Mrs Hunter are teaching our class.  With Mrs Hunter we are working on our enterprise projects in which we are learning how to set up a small business and sell things to make a profit.

Year 6 has been involved in the Garsington Opera project.  We have been making up songs and actions, and we staged a grand performance with other partnership schools at Wheatley Park.

We have also participated in the swimming gala.  All of Class 4 and some children from Class 3 competed, and we did very well, coming 5th out of 8 schools.

We have had a busy but fun term, which ended with an enjoyable day at Hill End and learning about nature in Outdoors Learning Week, as well as selling the products made in our enterprise projects.

THE PUPIL COUNCIL
The Pupil Council has been very busy this term working hard to achieve the Silver Eco Schools award of which they successfully completed in July 2010. They devised an action plan and some of the targets were to aim to reduce the amount of energy and water used by the school. They have read the electricity and water meters and will monitor the use of electricity and water carefully. They have also been focussing on encouraging the children to keep our school litter free. They took part in the Big Clean Up, where all pupil council members picked up litter within the school grounds.
